7 Skills To Become A Better Generalist

When I was 20, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur.

• To build an opportunity for others
• Doing what I love
• Help my parents work
• Become my own boss & freedom

But I had to be honest with myself, there are a lot of things to learn before getting there:

Here are 7 skills I learned the most that are helpful to becoming a better generalist:

1. Writing

While verbal communication is important, writing well means thinking clearly.

• business writing

2. Content Marketing

Many brands are specialists + media companies now.

You want to create content that’s helpful to grab people’s attention.

You want the content to drive results.

Learn:

• brand mapping — creative ideation
• how to educate through content
• visualisation

3. Sales

One of many skills I wish to hone early.

When you’ve brought the awareness, there’s time you will have to close.

Knowing which stage are you in the pipeline determines your communication style.

The goal is to bring in revenue at the right time without sounding salesy.

Learn:

• AIDA
• email pitch
• create pitch deck

4. Negotiation

“No” starts the conversation. “Yes” is the final goal.

Negotiation teaches you to see the situation from the other person’s perspective. You’ll reinforce positive to acknowledge them better.

5. Analysis

Collecting data is the first step. Interpreting it is the second.

Making decisions based on the data is another.

Learn:

• definition of each data
• pattern recognition
• comparison

6. People management

I never managed more than 10 people.

Managing people from different backgrounds require different communication styles.

• managing & challenging
• giving & receiving feedback
• setting boundaries

It’s scary and I’m learning this.

7. Digital PR

Getting your brand into the centre of your consumer is the dream.

You want it to be seen by your target audience.

One of many channels you can use is mainstream media and SEO.

• how to generate backlinks
